Opal – Key Visual Characteristics

  1. Play-of-Color (Opalescence)
    • Signature feature of precious opal.
    • Bright flashes of multiple colors (red, green, blue, orange, purple) that shift as the stone moves.
    • Caused by diffraction of light through silica spheres inside the opal.
  2. Body Color (Background Tone)
    • Ranges from white, black, gray, blue, orange, or colorless.
    • Influences the perceived intensity of the play-of-color:
      • Darker body tone (black opal) → more vivid colors.
      • Lighter body tone (white opal) → softer, pastel flashes.
  3. Transparency & Clarity
    • Can be transparent, translucent, or opaque.
    • Crystal and water opals are often transparent to semi-transparent, enhancing play-of-color.
    • Inclusions are common and generally do not reduce value unless they obscure the color play.
  4. Patterns of Color
    • Harlequin: Checkerboard pattern, very rare and valuable.
    • Rolling Flash: Broad flashes of color that move across the surface.
    • Pinfire: Tiny, closely spaced specks of color.
    • Flash or Ribbon: Linear streaks of color.
  5. Surface Luster
    • Smooth, polished surface gives soft, vitreous to waxy sheen.
    • Luster enhances the overall brilliance and depth of color.
  6. Shape & Cut
    • Cabochon (domed) cuts are standard to best display play-of-color.
    • Rarely faceted, because faceting can reduce the visible color effects.
  7. Size & Weight
    • Larger stones with strong, evenly distributed play-of-color are more valuable.
